Chapter Ten

The city bus ground to a stop and several passengers engrossed in reading, talking on their cells or catching a quick nap, lurched forward at the sudden halt. Farah flung the straps of her purse over one shoulder then stepped onto the pavement. She held her head high because, at the last minute earlier that morning, as her fingers touched the files in Keller’s desk, she only grabbed the folders she needed then snapped the cabinet closed.

Her heels clicked across the sidewalk in an even pace, her steps light due to the fact she’d refused to snoop through his private papers. She may have bent her morals by dressing in disguise to land this job, but that’s as far down as she’d stoop.

Emotions for Keller swayed back and forth, but a voice deep inside told her to wait, watch and listen. She witnessed his good, humane side. There might be more to his story than what the media portrayed, and if she listened to Alec’s friend, there was. If not and he proved her wrong, she could be secure in the knowledge that she might work for a man with limited morals but hers were intact.

Karah’s laughter floated through the open windows of Farah’s house as she topped the driveway and crossed the flagstone path leading to the front door. The sound gliding atop the light breeze made her smile. She loved hearing her sister happy.

“Stop it, Alec,” Karah said in a sing song voice. “Let me think about it.”

“Come on. Quit being a tease.” Alec’s voice was playful, but pleading at the same time. “You told me you’d think about it the other night. Time’s up.”

“I’m not sure if I’m ready.”

“Oh, you’re ready. Just give it up and say yes. Don’t make me wait any longer.”

With furrowed brow, Farah increased her pace to find out what Alec tried to convince her sister to take part in. A sick ache filled her belly as she grabbed the doorknob, flinging it wide into the entrance.

“You’ll have to find someone else. I can’t do what you’re asking when I look like this.”

“Like what? You’re beautiful and you’ll look great in the catering smock.”

Relief washed over Farah. She could save her sister another time. Not like Karah would ever need Farah to save her. To hear a partial conversation or get inaccurate facts and make judgments based on them wasn’t something she normally did, until lately it seemed. First with Keller, and now her own sister. She needed to get a grip and use her normal good sense.

Farah stood on the threshold, chest heaving from her race to get inside. Both Karah and Alec turned toward her. Alec’s face relaxed, full of fun, his grin spread across his face revealing two dimples on either side of his lips. Brown hair fell across his forehead and he brushed it away with a sideswipe of fingers.

The rosy hue on Karah’s cheeks made her wide-eyed expression look innocent, unsure. Not a look her sister wore often.
